Swansea University Events Team Secures Silver Green Tourism Award for Sustainable Excellence

Swansea University Events team is delighted to announce that they have been awarded the prestigious Silver Green Tourism Award. This internationally recognised certification highlights their commitment to sustainability and their ongoing efforts to organise environmentally friendly events.

This achievement reflects the team’s dedication to embedding sustainability at the heart of their operations. Through various innovative initiatives, the team has demonstrated their drive to minimise environmental impact while inspiring others to make greener choices. Here are some of the key initiatives that contributed to their success:

Pioneering Sustainable Practices

  • Keep Mug Campaign: This initiative encourages event attendees to use the same mug throughout the day, significantly reducing the reliance on disposable cups.
  • Reusable Lanyard Scheme: A simple but impactful idea, this scheme offers attendees discounts when they return their lanyards at the end of events, cutting down on unnecessary waste.
  • Water Stations: By promoting the use of refillable water bottles, the team has taken a proactive step in reducing single-use plastics at events.

University-Wide Sustainability Efforts

The award took into consideration efforts from the wider sustainability culture at the University. Some of the initiatives that bolster this ethos include:

  • Installation of solar panels to harness renewable energy.
  • Regular monthly beach cleans, which the team actively supports.
  • Use of eco-friendly cleaning products across University operations.
  • Implementation of decarbonisation strategies to reduce carbon emissions.

To further their commitment to sustainability, all events team members have completed a City and Guilds Level 2 Green Environment and Sustainability Training course. This qualification has equipped them with the knowledge and tools to make informed, eco-conscious decisions in their work.

The award was presented by Gareth Williams, the University’s Environment and Sustainability Assistant, during the launch of Go Green Week. This flagship event engages staff and students in activities designed to promote sustainability and encourage greener practices across campus.
