The Art of Paper Folding Comes to Swansea

Origami artists from across the UK, Holland, USA, Germany and Denmark gathered in Swansea this month for the British Origami Society’s Autumn Convention.

This was the very first time the society had brought the bi-annual convention to Wales and we were delighted to host it on our beautiful Singleton Park Campus.

The event took place from the 3rd to the 4th September and brought origami artists from all over the world to share their paper folding knowledge and skills .

The convention brought special guest Maria Sinayskaya from Durban, South Africa to Swansea to inspire members with her modular origami designs inspired by her love of mathematics and geometry. Find out more about Maria’s amazing work here.

The Welsh-themed event took over most of Singleton Park Campus’ main building: Fulton House and offered participants the chance to attend workshop sessions, talks and discussions. As well as offering a range of learning and sharing best practice opportunities, delegates were also able to relax in a specially designed “fold and talk” area and display their latest work in an incredible paper folding exhibition.

The British Origami Society has over 700 members worldwide. As well as running two conventions each year and producing a monthly publication for its members, the British Origami Society also facilitates local groups throughout the UK which are made up of members all devoted to the art of paper-folding.  Find out more about the Society here or visit the facebook page.

British Origami Society Chair Tony O’Hare said:

“This was the first time we have held our convention in Wales and we had an extremely warm welcome from the Event Services team at Swansea University.

“This is a really important event for our membership of origami artists. We hold two conventions each year and they give our members a chance to relax with like-minded people, learn new skills, share their paper folding stories and experiences and show off their work.

“All our members thoroughly enjoyed their time at Swansea University where they got to meet new friends and catch up with old ones while being looked after by a great team of staff in scenic surroundings right next to the lovely Singleton Park and overlooking beautiful Swansea Bay.

“I’m sure we’ll bring our events back to Swansea some time in the not too distant future”.
